Millions of people travel by train across India every day, but tracking a train in areas with poor connectivity was once a major challenge. Bengaluru-based Sigmoid Labs addressed this problem by developing the ‘Where Is My Train’ app. One of its key features is its ability to work without internet or GPS while passengers are travelling, using cell-tower information to determine the train’s location. The app also provides offline train schedules, making it particularly useful during journeys through areas with limited connectivity.
Its simple interface, low data usage and offline functionality helped the app gain widespread popularity among Indian railway passengers. In December 2018, Google acquired Sigmoid Labs, although the companies did not officially disclose the deal value. Media reports at the time estimated the acquisition at around $30–40 million. The journey of ‘Where Is My Train’ demonstrates how solving a simple, everyday problem with India-focused technology can create a product with massive reach and attract global tech giants.
