The rise of agentic AI is triggering fresh concerns across the global job market, particularly for white-collar roles. Unlike earlier technologies, this new wave of artificial intelligence can independently plan and execute tasks, going far beyond answering queries. Tools like those developed by Anthropic and its Claude platform are rapidly evolving, raising fears of widespread job disruption. Sam Altman has warned that while the future remains uncertain, several job categories could disappear entirely. According to Dario Amodei, up to 20 percent of jobs in fields like coding, finance, and law could be affected. This shift is particularly alarming for entry-level white-collar jobs, which serve as a foundation for the middle class.
India, long known as the world’s back office, is now facing a major challenge. Companies such as Cognizant, Salesforce, and Freshworks have already reduced workforce numbers as AI takes over support, coding, and operational tasks. Even global firms like Duolingo, Chegg, and HP are cutting jobs due to automation. Meanwhile, advancements are also transforming defense sectors, with drones and autonomous systems playing a key role in modern warfare. India is responding by investing in drone training and innovation. As AI continues to reshape industries, experts stress that upskilling and adaptability will be critical for survival in the evolving job landscape.
