Sravana month holds a special place in Hindu tradition, with Fridays considered particularly auspicious for worshipping Goddess Lakshmi. Women observe Varalakshmi Vratam with devotion, praying for the health, prosperity, happiness and well-being of their families. Mondays are traditionally dedicated to Lord Shiva, Tuesdays to Mangala Gowri, Fridays to Goddess Lakshmi, and Saturdays to Lord Venkateswara and Lord Subrahmanya.
Varalakshmi Vratam
Varalakshmi Vratam is observed on the Friday preceding Sravana Purnima. Devotees worship Goddess Varalakshmi as a form of Ashtalakshmi and seek blessings for prosperity, peace and family well-being. On Sravana Fridays, devotees traditionally try to avoid anger, arguments, negative thoughts and unnecessary speech while maintaining a peaceful atmosphere at home.
Traditional Beliefs and Practices
Some people believe that buying items such as salt and cooking oil on Fridays should be avoided, although there is no clear scriptural basis for treating this as a compulsory rule. Such practices are better understood as traditional beliefs rather than mandatory religious restrictions. Applying sandalwood is also considered auspicious in tradition, as it is believed to promote calmness. Devotion, peaceful conduct and positive thoughts are considered more important aspects of observing the day.
