India’s Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly stormed into the semi-finals of the World Badminton Championships, securing a medal in the women’s doubles event. The Indian pair defeated China’s Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian 16-21, 21-15, 21-13 in a thrilling quarter-final. After losing the opening game, Gayatri and Treesa produced a strong comeback to win the next two games and seal the match.
The victory ensures India’s first women’s doubles medal at the World Championships in 15 years. The last Indian pair to win a medal in the event was Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta, who claimed bronze in 2011. Fresh from receiving the Arjuna Award, Gayatri once again showcased her quality alongside Treesa. A semi-final victory would make them the first Indian women’s doubles pair to reach the World Championships final.
