

Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki passed away in Chennai on Friday, August 21, at the age of 94. She had been undergoing treatment at Kauvery Hospital after suffering age-related health complications and was receiving intensive medical care. Nadigar Sangam president Nassar confirmed her death and stated that she breathed her last at 1:59 PM.
Janaki’s death marks the end of an illustrious career spanning several decades. She made her acting debut with the Telugu film Shavukaru in 1950 and went on to work extensively in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada cinema. She acted in more than 400 films and shared the screen with several legendary actors.
Her contribution to Indian cinema earned her several honours, including the Padma Shri in 2022. Her performances across different eras made her one of the respected veteran actors of South Indian cinema. News of her passing has left the film fraternity and fans mourning the loss of a celebrated performer.
