Ishan Kishan has virtually sealed his place as Team India’s opener alongside Abhishek Sharma for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. In the warm-up match against South Africa held in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday, Kishan opened the innings and delivered a blistering knock. He smashed 53 runs off just 20 balls, including two fours and seven sixes, strengthening his claim as India’s first-choice opener. In contrast, Sanju Samson failed to make the final XI, indicating a tough road ahead for him in the tournament.
After spending a phase away from the national side, Ishan Kishan made a strong comeback with impressive performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He continued his form in the T20 series against New Zealand, scoring 215 runs in four innings to finish as the second-highest run-getter. His standout knocks included 76 in Raipur and a stunning 103 off 43 balls in Thiruvananthapuram. Kishan also jumped 32 places to reach 32nd position in the latest ICC T20 batting rankings. With the T20 World Cup scheduled from February 7 to March 8 in India and Sri Lanka, experts believe consistent performances could firmly cement Kishan’s place in Team India.
