Modi Government Gave Sports a New Direction - Pemmasani

Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said the Narendra Modi government has brought systematic reforms to India’s sports sector since 2014. He said initiatives to identify sporting talent and strengthen anti-doping measures have provided a major boost to the sector. A sports complex is being built in Guntur at a cost of Rs.14 crore, while the sports budget has increased from around Rs.2,000 crore to more than Rs.4,000 crore, he said.

Pemmasani said the Centre aims to invest Rs.25,000 crore in sports infrastructure over the next five years. He described the establishment of Olympic-level training centres as part of the government’s broader sports vision. The Centre is also preparing plans targeting the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics. He said regular interaction with young people is helping the government design measures based on their needs, while growing confidence among Indian youth has contributed to the country’s improved medal tally over the past decade.
