Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils are making headlines at the US Open after the husband-and-wife duo advanced to the mixed doubles semifinals. In Wednesday’s quarterfinal, the pair defeated Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten 5-4, 4-5, 10-8 in a closely contested match. After the two teams shared a set each, the contest was decided by a match tiebreak. Svitolina and Monfils will now take on Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli for a place in the final. In another quarterfinal, Mira Andreeva and Andrey Rublev beat Diana Shnaider and Casper Ruud 4-1, 4-5, 10-5 and advanced to the semifinals.
Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz, however, were knocked out after losing 4-5, 1-4 to Bencic and Cobolli in the quarterfinals. In women’s doubles, Venus and Serena Williams have received a wild card and will compete together at the US Open. The sisters previously won the women’s doubles title at the tournament in 1999 and 2009. Meanwhile, tennis legend Roger Federer added star power to the event at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Federer played a one-set exhibition against Andy Roddick, winning 6-3, before teaming up with John McEnroe to beat Roddick and Andre Agassi 7-5 in a doubles exhibition.
