The Bangladesh women’s cricket team’s tour of India, which included three ODIs and three T20Is scheduled for December under the ICC Future Tours Programme, has been postponed. Both cricket boards have agreed to reschedule the series, citing scheduling pressure amid a sensitive political environment between the two countries. The decision emerged as tensions escalated after a Dhaka tribunal delivered a controversial verdict against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Political developments in Bangladesh have significantly strained bilateral relations in recent months. Hasina, who left Bangladesh and reached India in August 2024 following a student-led uprising, was later tried in absentia and handed a death sentence by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal. Bangladesh has since demanded her extradition, while India expressed concern over the verdict and called for stability through constructive engagement. These political uncertainties are understood to have influenced the postponement, even though neither board has officially stated the exact reason.
For India’s women’s cricket team, the postponement comes at an unfortunate time. The series was expected to be their first bilateral assignment since their historic Women’s ODI World Cup victory earlier this year, where they defeated South Africa in a memorable final. The rescheduled dates are expected to be announced once the situation between the two nations stabilizes.
