Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das, who is serving a jail sentence in Bangladesh, has been granted five hours of parole to attend his mother Sandhya Rani Dhar’s funeral. Sandhya Rani, who had been suffering from illness for some time, died on Thursday at the age of 70. Chittagong District Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia reportedly approved the temporary release after considering a request from the family. Das was allowed to travel to Hathazari for the funeral and is required to return to Chittagong Central Jail within the stipulated time.
The family had earlier requested parole when Sandhya Rani was seriously ill, but authorities reportedly said that her release could not be permitted under the applicable rules. Following her death, the family submitted another request, leading to the five-hour parole being granted. Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested in November 2024 and was charged with sedition over allegations of disrespecting Bangladesh’s national flag. His name was later included in several other criminal cases involving allegations of murder, attempted murder and vandalism.
