Tamil Nadu has reduced the Value Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) at Chennai Airport from 29% to 16%, a move expected to help airlines manage operating costs and support flight expansion. The tax reduction is seen as an important step towards improving Chennai’s competitiveness as an aviation hub and encouraging airlines to increase services. According to the information shared, the largest airline operator has committed to increasing its flights by 25%, while another airline operator has reportedly promised an 8% increase. The move is expected to benefit passengers by potentially improving connectivity and providing more travel options, although the actual increase will depend on airlines’ operational plans and demand.
IndiGo has welcomed the reduction in ATF VAT, recognising the importance of lower fuel-related costs for airline operations. The airline has also urged the Tamil Nadu government to support the introduction of a direct flight between Chennai and Japan, which could strengthen international connectivity and facilitate travel for business and leisure passengers. A direct service could also improve links between Tamil Nadu and Japan’s business and tourism sectors. The VAT cut and the proposed flight increases are expected to support Chennai Airport’s growth, but the final schedules and routes will depend on airline announcements and the necessary operational approvals.
