The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, to formally allow the use of E100 fuel, which consists of 100% ethanol, in vehicles. The amendments to Rules 115 and 115E introduce provisions for E100 fuel and officially include it in the relevant emission standards tables. The move establishes a regulatory framework for recognising and assessing vehicles designed to operate on this high-ethanol fuel blend. Ethanol is an alcohol-based fuel that can be produced from agricultural feedstocks, and its increased use is part of India’s broader efforts to promote alternative fuels and reduce dependence on conventional petroleum products.
E100 differs from E85, which contains up to 85% ethanol, as E100 consists entirely of ethanol. However, the regulatory approval does not mean that every existing petrol vehicle can immediately use E100. Vehicles must be appropriately designed or compatible with the fuel, and manufacturers must meet the applicable safety, performance and emission requirements. The rule changes provide formal recognition for E100 within the motor vehicle regulatory framework, while the practical adoption of the fuel will depend on vehicle compatibility, availability and supporting infrastructure.
