Here Are the Highlights of Chakravarthy’s Musical Journey in Telugu Cinema

Chakravarthy was one of the most influential music directors in Telugu cinema, ruling the industry with his distinctive compositions for nearly a decade and a half. Born Kommineni Apparao, he was the brother of actor and director Kommineni Seshagiri Rao. He began his film career as a playback singer, making his debut with a song in the Kannada film ‘Mangalya Yogam’ and later singing two songs in ‘Jaya Vijaya’. However, he was not keen on continuing as a singer and worked as an assistant director under C.S. Rao. He later became a busy dubbing artist, lending his voice in Telugu for leading stars including M.G. Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. Producer Chatterjee Apparao gave him the screen name Chakravarthy and introduced him as a music director with ‘Mooga Prema’ in 1971. Although the film did not succeed, producer Kranti Kumar gave him another opportunity with ‘Sharada’. Directed by K. Viswanath, the film became a musical success and brought Chakravarthy widespread recognition. He subsequently composed music for films such as ‘Ida Lokam’, ‘Babu’ and ‘Annadammula Anubandham’.

The 1977 NTR-starrer ‘Yamagola’ became a major turning point in Chakravarthy’s career, with all the songs becoming popular and establishing him as a leading mass music director. He later created memorable tunes for films including ‘Driver Ramudu’, ‘Kondaveeti Simham’, ‘Balipitham’, ‘Jebudonga’ and ‘Premabhishekam’. Known for composing tunes at remarkable speed, Chakravarthy earned the distinction of delivering musical hits for heroes across four generations and working on nearly 80 films in a single year. By 1981 and 1982, he had risen above several established composers and remained at the top until 1988. He composed music for a total of 959 films, falling just 41 films short of the rare milestone of 1,000 movies. The tragic death of his elder son Rajendra Prasad in a bike accident deeply affected him, and Chakravarthy gradually withdrew from film music from 1989. He passed away on February 3, 2002, after both his kidneys failed, bringing an end to a remarkable era in Telugu film music.
