The fourth Test of the 2025–26 series between Australia and England got underway at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, producing a dramatic opening day dominated entirely by bowlers. In a rare spectacle, as many as 20 wickets fell on Day 1, underlining the fierce bowling conditions and the struggles faced by batters from both sides.
Australia, after losing the toss and being asked to bat first, were bowled out for just 152 runs in their first innings. England pacer Josh Tongue starred with the ball, claiming five wickets and becoming the first England bowler in the 21st century to take a five-wicket haul at the MCG. His disciplined spell put Australia on the back foot early in the match.
England, however, fared even worse in their reply, collapsing to 110 all out in just 29.5 overs and conceding a 42-run first-innings lead. Harry Brook top-scored with 41, while Gus Atkinson contributed 28. Australia’s bowlers shared the spoils, with Michael Neser picking up four wickets, Scott Boland three, Mitchell Starc two, and Cameron Green one. By stumps, Australia had moved to 4 without loss in their second innings, with Travis Head and Scott Boland at the crease, extending their overall lead to 46 runs.
