US President Donald Trump has sparked widespread controversy by declaring himself the interim president of Venezuela. In a post on his Truth Social platform, he shared an edited screenshot resembling a Wikipedia page, claiming he has been serving as Venezuela's interim president since January this year. The announcement comes in the backdrop of recent US military strikes on Venezuela aimed at curbing drug trafficking. American forces reportedly raided the capital Caracas, detaining President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, and transferring them to the United States. Following this, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez assumed the role of interim president for a 90-day period, as confirmed by Venezuela's defense minister.
Amid ongoing uncertainty over who will take full presidential responsibilities in Venezuela, Trump's self-proclamation has become a major talking point. Speculation had been rife about handing power to opposition leader and Nobel laureate Maria Corina Machado, but Trump recently dismissed the idea, stating she lacks sufficient public support. He also urged against using funds for Maduro's legal cases. The viral post has triggered intense debate online - whether it is a serious political move or a satirical stunt.
