US President Donald Trump has stirred controversy by linking the Greenland issue with the Nobel Peace Prize. He claimed that despite stopping more than eight wars, Norway had decided not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump said he would no longer focus on peace initiatives and would instead prioritize American interests.
Trump reportedly conveyed this message over a phone call to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. He also questioned Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland, stating that the country lacks proper written documentation to prove its ownership of the island.
He dismissed Denmark’s argument that one of its ships visited Greenland centuries ago, adding that American ships have also visited the island many times. Trump further alleged that China and Russia are aggressively attempting to gain control over Greenland and argued that Denmark does not have the capability to protect the island.
Highlighting his contributions to NATO, Trump said it was now time for NATO to act in the interest of the United States. He concluded by stating that full American control over Greenland is essential for global security.
Responding to Trump’s remarks, the Norwegian Prime Minister clarified that the Norwegian government has no role in awarding the Nobel Peace Prize, emphasizing that the winners are selected by an independent Nobel Committee.
