Rising Death Toll in Nepal Flood Disaster

The devastating floods that struck Nepal on August 26 have left a massive trail of destruction. The death toll rose to 903 by Monday, while around 4,200 people remained unaccounted for, according to Nepalese authorities. The Nepal Army, police and Armed Police Force are continuing round-the-clock search and rescue operations, but difficult terrain, thick mud and debris are severely hampering efforts. A shortage of specialised rescue equipment has added to the challenges faced by the teams.

Rescue operations are also focused on hydropower project tunnels where hundreds of workers are missing. Authorities said 933 people were reported missing from hydropower projects along the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi river corridors. So far, 279 people have been rescued from the tunnels, while the condition of others remains unknown. Teams are clearing mud and debris to reach those trapped underground, with assistance from experts from India, China and other countries.
