During his visit to Tokyo, US President Donald Trump hailed Japan’s new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, calling Japan “an ally at the strongest level.” The two leaders met at the Akasaka Palace and signed new cooperation agreements aimed at strengthening trade, investment, and security ties between the two nations.Takaichi, who recently became Japan’s first female prime minister, shared that Japan would gift 250 cherry trees to the United States next year to mark America’s 250th anniversary, along with fireworks from Akita Prefecture for the July 4 celebrations.
Trump praised her leadership, describing her appointment as a “big deal” and reaffirming America’s commitment to Japan. “Anything I can do to help Japan, we will be there. We are an ally at the strongest level,” he said.
The meeting also highlighted potential trade discussions, with Trump reportedly seeking USD 550 billion in Japanese investment and encouraging Japan to purchase more American-made vehicles, including the Ford F-150 trucks displayed outside the palace. Both leaders signed two agreements — one symbolizing the “golden age” of the US-Japan alliance, and another establishing a framework for securing critical minerals and rare earth supplies.Trump’s Tokyo stop is part of a broader Asia tour, following meetings in Malaysia and ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea. He also addressed US troops aboard the USS George Washington and hinted at improving ties with China, as trade negotiators from both nations move closer to an agreement.
