The Telangana state government has decided to take over the outstanding debts of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), amounting to ₹4,780 crore. Officials stated that the move is aimed at ensuring financial stability and smooth functioning of the civic administration. With GHMC recently being bifurcated into three separate corporations, the government had constituted a task force committee to examine the distribution of liabilities among the newly formed bodies.
However, after careful consideration, authorities concluded that allocating portions of the debt to the new corporations could cause severe financial strain. In order to safeguard their operational efficiency, the state government has opted to assume full responsibility for the entire outstanding amount. The decision is expected to provide relief to the civic bodies and enable them to focus on infrastructure development and public services.
