Ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued notices to nearly 10 lakh voters after identifying errors and incomplete details in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The revision exercise, conducted from November 4 to December 14 through door-to-door verification, revealed that several electors had not submitted mandatory personal, family, or documentary information.
Election officials clarified that the notices are meant to seek clarification and supporting documents to ensure that eligible voters are retained in the rolls and not removed. To facilitate the process, the Tamil Nadu government has instructed zonal tahsildars to issue Permanent Residence Certificates or Nativity Certificates free of cost to affected voters until January 25, 2026.
According to the draft electoral rolls, around 10.93 lakh names were removed in central districts due to duplication, migration, or death. Across the state, nearly 97 lakh entries have been deleted as part of the clean-up drive. The Election Commission is also addressing logical errors such as spelling mistakes and inconsistencies to minimize unnecessary hearings and improve the overall accuracy of the voter rolls.
