The Tamil Nadu government is reportedly considering providing official cars and personal assistants to first-time MLAs to help them effectively discharge their legislative and constituency responsibilities. The 2026 Assembly election saw a large number of newcomers enter the 234-member House, including a significant number of legislators from the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Reports say that 146 first-time MLAs have already been given a special orientation on Assembly procedures and parliamentary conventions.
The proposal gained attention after VCK MLA Jyothimani reportedly highlighted the financial difficulties faced by some legislators, including the inability to maintain a vehicle or afford an assistant while serving their constituencies. Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar is said to have taken the request to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. According to reports, the government has agreed in principle to the proposal, with an official announcement expected during the ongoing Assembly session.
