Supreme Court Hears West Bengal S.I.R Controversy, Issues Key Directions to Election Commission

The Supreme Court on Monday took up the hearing on the West Bengal S.I.R controversy and issued crucial directions to the Election Commission. The court instructed that the list of individuals who were served notices must be prominently displayed at Gram Panchayat offices and Block-level offices to ensure transparency and public access.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court made several significant observations, cautioning authorities against causing inconvenience to the public. Raising questions over objections, the court asked why a 15-year age gap between a mother and child should be treated as an anomaly and pointed out that child marriages have occurred in the country in the past. The court also noted that notices had been issued to over one crore people and warned against creating a third layer of complications in the process.
