The issue of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant’s privatization has once again stirred a major political storm in Andhra Pradesh. The recent comments made by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu during the CII Summit, referring to the plant as a “white elephant,” have triggered intense backlash from the opposition YSRCP. The YSRCP accused the TDP-led government of laying the groundwork for privatization, fueling debates across social media and mainstream media platforms.
TDP leaders, however, clarified that the Chief Minister’s remarks were misinterpreted. They explained that the CM intended to emphasize that if employees do not work efficiently, even large organizations could become unproductive. They also pointed out that the new government had already allocated nearly ₹15,000 crore to revive the plant, proving their commitment to keeping it public. Despite this, a few independent journalists and commentators criticized the CM, escalating the political tensions further.
Observers also recalled that during the previous YSRCP regime, steel plant employees protested for over 900 days demanding protection of the plant, yet no substantial action was taken. After the NDA coalition came to power, fresh investments helped restart operations in one of the plant’s blast furnaces. However, the TDP reportedly failed to promote this achievement widely. Following backlash from YSRCP, the ruling alliance is now shifting focus to damage control and clearer communication. The incident serves as a reminder for top leaders like Chandrababu, Pawan Kalyan, and Lokesh to be extra cautious while making public remarks.
