The delimitation issue has once again triggered a political row in Tamil Nadu. The ruling DMK and opposition AIADMK have criticised Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, alleging that his position has softened after his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Vijay had recently backed a Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution seeking to retain the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats, but later called for safeguards to ensure that southern states do not lose their share of parliamentary representation under delimitation.
DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran questioned Vijay’s latest position, alleging that the TVK had changed its stance on the contentious issue. AIADMK and AMMK leader T.T.V. Dhinakaran have also criticised the government over the perceived shift. TVK, however, has rejected the allegations and maintained that there has been no change in its position, insisting that it supports only a “fair delimitation” that protects Tamil Nadu and ensures that southern states do not lose their parliamentary representation.
