BJP president Nitin Nabin has criticised the Congress over its decision to sing only the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram at party events. Nabin accused the Congress of following vote-bank politics and alleged that the party was behaving like the “new Muslim League.” He said limiting the national song’s rendition was disrespectful to freedom fighters who associated Vande Mataram with India’s freedom struggle.
The Congress has defended its decision, saying it is in line with its 1937 resolution, under which the first two stanzas were adopted for public gatherings. The issue has now triggered a fresh political debate between the BJP and Congress over the National Song, its historical rendition and its place in public and political events.
