The Telangana government has decided to procure 60 new coaches for the Hyderabad Metro Rail network. At present, 57 trains operate with three coaches each. One additional coach will be added to every rake, increasing passenger capacity across the three corridors LB Nagar to Miyapur, JBS to MGBS and Nagole to Raidurg covering a total distance of 69.2 km. Each coach is estimated to cost around ₹20 crore, taking the total expenditure to approximately ₹1,200 crore.
The order is likely to be placed with Bengaluru based BEML under the Make in India initiative. Hyundai Rotem, which manufactured the existing Hyderabad Metro coaches, has reportedly agreed to share its technology with BEML for the new coaches. DMRC will be engaged as a consultant for the procurement process. Officials are targeting delivery within 8–10 months, although manufacturing could take around 15 months after the order is placed. Around 4.6 lakh passengers currently use the Hyderabad Metro through nearly 1,200 daily trips.
