Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly criticized the All India Trinamool Congress government, stating that the gherao of judicial officials who had visited Malda for inspection was a clear example of “jungle raj” in the state. He remarked that the ongoing elections represent a contest between Trinamool’s alleged politics of fear and the assurance offered by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Addressing an election rally in Cooch Behar, he described the polls as decisive for the future of the state and warned that after the results on May 4, strict action would be taken against alleged lawlessness. Modi accused the state government of undermining democracy on a daily basis and disregarding constitutional institutions. Referring to the Malda incident, he said it reflected the arrogance and misgovernance of the Trinamool regime, adding that increasing legal pressure has led to repeated attacks on constitutional bodies, prompting intervention by the Supreme Court of India.
He further alleged that the Trinamool government opposes measures like NRC and CAA to protect illegal infiltrators and is obstructing citizenship for Hindu refugees. According to him, demographic changes have occurred in border areas during Trinamool’s rule, with direct support being extended to infiltrators. He also criticized the party’s recent manifesto for not using the name “Bengal,” suggesting an attempt to alter the state’s identity. Modi stated that after Congress and Left rule, Bengal is now facing decline under Trinamool, with per capita income falling below the national average from previously higher levels. Additionally, he announced that 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies would be implemented from 2029, assuring that a long-pending demand of women across the country would soon be fulfilled.
