The Supreme Court has concluded the hearing on petitions seeking contempt action against the Speaker for allegedly failing to implement its earlier order directing a decision on disqualification petitions against ten MLAs within three months. The petitions were filed by BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao, MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy, and BJP Legislature Party leader Eleti Maheshwar Reddy. A bench comprising Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice A.G. Masih heard the case on Thursday. Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing the Speaker, informed the court that decisions on all ten disqualification petitions had already been delivered.
Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the state government, argued that the Speaker had complied with the Supreme Court’s earlier directions by issuing verdicts in all the cases and therefore the matter stood resolved. However, the petitioners’ lawyers contended that the Speaker’s orders had not yet been officially notified. Responding to this, Justice Sanjay Karol directed that the Speaker’s orders be officially published by Friday and that copies of the orders and related documents be provided to the petitioners within four days in accordance with the law.
