Humanoid Robot Maya’s Natural Dance to Marathi Song Goes Viral

Robots may possess advanced intelligence, but their movements have traditionally appeared mechanical and artificial compared with those of humans. Maya, an Indian-made humanoid robot, is challenging that perception with an impressive dance performance. Developed jointly by India’s Tuesday Labs and Masters’ Union, Maya was trained to perform dance movements using motion-capture technology and reinforcement learning. The training approach draws on motion-capture techniques famously used in filmmaking, including technologies associated with James Cameron’s Avatar.

The robot was made to dance to the Marathi song ‘Vajle Ki Bara’, and its remarkably fluid movements have caught the attention of viewers online. Unlike the rigid movements commonly associated with robots, Maya’s performance resembles that of a trained traditional dancer, making the video widely popular on the internet. Meanwhile, researchers at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in the United States are exploring Bharatanatyam mudras and AI-based training methods to help robots develop movements that appear more natural and human-like.
