The luxury cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey, which set out on a journey around the world, has suspended its voyage amid the impact of the Iran war. Rising fuel costs linked to developments, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, have made it difficult for the operator to sustain the journey. The vessel is currently stranded at Sihanoukville Port in Cambodia. In a statement, the company said passing the additional fuel costs on to passengers was not a viable solution. Around 200 passengers were reportedly on board, and temporary accommodation arrangements are being made for them. The operator plans to undertake restructuring measures over the next 60 days but has not guaranteed that the ship will resume its voyage.
Owned by Florida-based Villa Vie Residences, the 640-foot-long vessel began its world voyage from Belfast, Northern Ireland, two years ago. Its itinerary was designed to cover more than 400 destinations, including places that many other ships cannot reach. According to the company’s website, cabin prices for a five-year residential stay start at approximately ₹57 lakh, while permanent cabins cost more than ₹1.14 crore. Cabins can also be rented for around ₹3.32 lakh per month. Food, Wi-Fi, housekeeping, medical services and other facilities require additional monthly payments.
