Bengaluru: A major controversy has erupted in Karnataka after several legislators, led by Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar, demanded free tickets and VIP treatment for the upcoming IPL 2026 matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Speaking in the Assembly and later to the media, Kashappanavar asserted that as public representatives, they should not be expected to stand in long queues or sit in general galleries with the common public. "We are VIPs; we cannot stand in queues. Last time, we were made to wait in line and seated in the public gallery, which is unacceptable," he stated.
The legislators accused the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) of disrespecting elected representatives despite utilizing various government facilities and security services. They demanded a minimum of five premium tickets for each MLA and their family members, along with a dedicated lounge and separate seating arrangements. The demand found support across party lines, including from the Leader of Opposition, R. Ashoka, who pointed out that the stadium sits on government land leased at a nominal price, yet MLAs struggle to get tickets. In response to these complaints, Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader directed the state government to coordinate with the KSCA to ensure a minimum of four VIP tickets for each legislator. Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar also assured the house that he would discuss the matter with the cricket association to resolve the issue. While the politicians argue it is their right as part of the government, the demand has sparked a heated debate on social media regarding "VIP culture" and the priorities of elected officials.
