Experts say that eating sugar alone cannot be considered a direct cause of acid reflux or acidity. However, foods such as cakes, pastries, chocolate, ice cream and sugary drinks can also be high in fat and calories, and consuming them frequently or in large quantities may worsen heartburn, indigestion and reflux in some people. Those who already experience acidity should pay attention to foods that trigger their symptoms.
Acid reflux can occur when the lower esophageal sphincter, the muscle between the stomach and esophagus, does not function properly. Eating large meals, consuming high-fat foods, being overweight and having late-night meals may also contribute to reflux. To manage symptoms, it is advisable to control portion sizes, avoid lying down immediately after eating and maintain a gap of around two to three hours between dinner and bedtime. People experiencing frequent or persistent acidity, severe chest pain, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood or unexplained weight loss should seek medical advice.
