Karnataka Minister’s ‘Tip’ Remark for Government Officials Sparks Bribery Row

Karnataka minister K.M. Shivalinge Gowda has sparked controversy with remarks suggesting that citizens could voluntarily offer a “tip” or “honorarium” to government officials who complete their work on time. The comments were made during a public grievance meeting in Hassan district. When a participant raised concerns about officials allegedly demanding money to complete government-related work, the minister said there was nothing wrong with voluntarily offering money to officials who perform their duties promptly. The remarks drew objections from people attending the meeting, with some questioning whether such a statement could encourage bribery.

As the discussion grew tense, Hassan Deputy Commissioner K.S. Latha Kumari intervened to calm the situation and said strict action would be taken against officials who demand bribes. Gowda later clarified his remarks, saying his intention was to emphasise respect for honest officials and that he did not intend to encourage bribery. The BJP criticised the minister’s comments, with BJP MLC C.T. Ravi calling for the remarks to be withdrawn and an apology to the public.
