Political tensions have reportedly surfaced within the White House after the Republicans lost control of both the US Senate and the House of Representatives to the Democrats in the midterm elections. Vice President JD Vance has criticised President Donald Trump's policies, attributing the party's defeat to the decision to go to war with Iran. In a lengthy post on X, Vance argued that the setback was not due to lower voter turnout but because several people who supported the Republicans in the 2024 presidential election switched their allegiance to the Democrats out of anger. He pointed to rising living costs, inflation and fuel prices linked to the Iran conflict, along with public dissatisfaction over Washington's diplomatic ties with Israel, as key factors behind the defeat.
Vance also reportedly questioned Israel's influence on US foreign policy, insisting that Washington should not allow its decisions to be dictated by another country or become involved in endless foreign wars. According to an Axios report, he privately said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was wrong on every point regarding Iran. Vance's remarks are also being viewed as a possible attempt to distance himself from Trump's controversial decisions ahead of the 2028 presidential election. With Trump constitutionally barred from seeking a third elected term, Vance is seen as a potential Republican presidential contender. In his post, he outlined priorities such as ending the war with Iran, reducing inflation and living costs, putting America first and reassessing ties with Israel to regain the support of Republican voters.
