The Democratic Party's sweeping victory in the US midterm elections is expected to create significant political and personal challenges for President Donald Trump. With Democrats securing a majority in both chambers of Congress, senior party leaders are preparing investigations into alleged corruption involving Trump and his associates. The proposed inquiries are expected to cover five major areas, including Trump's family businesses and growing wealth, the functioning of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the handling of Jeffrey Epstein-related files, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and alleged corruption within the administration. Democrats are also planning to examine Trump's family business interests, real estate projects, cryptocurrency transactions and the role of his relatives in mineral-related deals. Some lawmakers have additionally called for investigations into construction projects at the White House, including Trump's proposed ballroom. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has also suggested pursuing a third impeachment effort against Trump.
Corruption emerged as a major concern among voters during the elections, with a survey of around one lakh people indicating that nearly 50% considered it their primary issue. Democrats are also expected to investigate the Trump administration's handling of the Iran war, including civilian casualties, military spending, ammunition shortages and the preparedness of US forces. Military operations in the Caribbean Sea conducted in the name of combating drug trafficking may also come under scrutiny. However, removing Trump through impeachment would remain difficult, as conviction in the Senate requires a two-thirds majority. Meanwhile, the White House responded to the Republican defeat by posting Trump's photograph with the message 'Never Surrender'. Trump acknowledged that the eight-month conflict with Iran and the resulting rise in fuel prices contributed to his party's electoral setback. However, he maintained that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains essential and indicated that he would make the same decision again despite the political consequences.
