India has strongly rejected reports quoting Netherlands Prime Minister Rob Jetten expressing concerns over media freedom and minority rights in the country. Responding to the remarks, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that India’s vibrant democracy guarantees freedom of expression to all citizens and reflects the country’s deeply rooted cultural diversity. Officials clarified that such comments arise from a lack of understanding about India’s social and civilizational complexities.
Foreign Ministry Secretary Sibi George emphasized that India’s civilization is over 5,000 years old and has always embraced religious, linguistic, and cultural diversity. He pointed out that Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism all originated in India and continue to flourish peacefully. George also highlighted that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have coexisted in India for centuries without disruption. He further stated that the minority population in India has increased from 11 percent at the time of independence to nearly 20 percent today, reflecting the country’s inclusive democratic structure. Meanwhile, Dutch PM Rob Jetten later described India and the Netherlands as nations that highly value democracy.
