The planned RSS event featuring chief Mohan Bhagwat in New York has triggered a debate. Bhagwat is scheduled to address the ‘Universal Oneness Celebration’ at Madison Square Garden on August 29. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said that he does not support the event. However, he also said he was unsure whether the city administration has the authority to cancel a privately organised gathering.
The event is being held as part of Bhagwat’s US visit during the RSS centenary year and is expected to bring together members of the Indian-American community. It is being organised by American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD). The mayor’s opposition has intensified the debate surrounding the programme, while organisers have described it as an event focused on dialogue, mutual respect and unity.
