India Has Over 6.6 Lakh Temples, Study Reveals

India is home to more than 6.60 lakh temples, according to a study cited in the report. The findings highlight the country’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage, with temples spread across regions and communities. When analysed in proportion to population, Goa and Tamil Nadu are reported to have a particularly high concentration of temples.

The study also notes that a significant number of temples were constructed between 800 and 1200 CE, reflecting the remarkable architectural, religious and cultural developments of that period. These ancient shrines continue to stand as symbols of India’s enduring traditions and devotion.
