Senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot stirred a major political controversy after stating that if former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi were alive today, she would have banned the Bharatiya Janata Party. Speaking at an event in Jaipur, Gehlot accused the BJP of engaging in politics based on Hindutva and religion.
He further alleged that religion-based politics was creating a dangerous environment in the country and undermining the spirit of the Constitution, which ensures equal respect for all religions. The remarks triggered sharp reactions from BJP leaders, who accused Gehlot of having an authoritarian mindset and referenced the 1975 Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi. The controversy has since gone viral, reigniting debates on Hindutva, secularism, and the role of religion in Indian politics.
