The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the expansion of Delhi Metro Phase 5(A). The project has been cleared with an allocation of ₹12,015 crore and will cover a length of 16 kilometres, connecting 13 new stations. With this expansion, the rapid transit network is expected to touch the 400-kilometre mark within the next three years.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will construct three new corridors under Phase 5(A), calling it a major milestone in the history of the Delhi Metro. He added that the project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by nearly 33,000 tonnes and will be completed within three years. Once operational, the Delhi Metro’s network length will exceed 400 kilometres, making it one of the largest urban rail networks in the world.
