The United Kingdom government is set to tighten rules for migrants seeking permanent residency. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has proposed key changes to the Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) process. As per the proposal, the minimum residency requirement for certain applicants will be increased from five years to ten years, while for some categories it could be extended up to 20 years.
In addition to the extended timeline, eligibility criteria are also being made stricter. Applicants must have a clean criminal record and demonstrate stable financial earnings. The proposal includes a requirement of earning more than £12,570 annually for the past three years. These changes are aimed at strengthening immigration controls and ensuring long-term economic contribution from migrants.
