Cyber crimes are increasing rapidly in India, according to the Truecaller India Insight Report 2025. Instead of regular SMS and phone calls, fraudsters are now targeting people through third-party apps like WhatsApp, Instagram Direct Messages and Telegram. They are also sending fake electricity bills and traffic fine messages to steal money. Truecaller users reported 4,168 crore spam calls and 12,903 crore spam messages. Out of these, 770 crore calls were made by scammers pretending to be banks, government offices, payment platforms and well-known brands.
The report states that elderly people are the main targets of scammers, as they are more likely to fall into such traps and may not report the fraud. With the help of community reporting, Truecaller blocked 1,189 crore spam calls from reaching users. If each spam call takes about 1.8 minutes, the app saved nearly 21.7 lakh hours daily and 1.5 crore hours weekly. The report was prepared after analyzing data from 32 crore users.
According to the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, Indians lost Rs. 19,813 crore to fraud in 2025 and 21.77 lakh complaints were registered. Due to the use of advanced technology, identifying such scams and scammers has become more difficult.
