To assist passengers facing difficulties due to the cancellation of IndiGo flights, the Railway Department has stepped in. Starting Saturday, special trains have been introduced on various routes for air passengers. Additional coaches have also been attached to several existing trains. With limited alternative transport options, officials stated that more services will be made available in the coming days based on demand.
Several special trains have begun operating under the Central, Western, North Western, and Eastern Railway zones. Additional services are now available on routes such as Pune–Bengaluru, Pune–Delhi, Mumbai–New Delhi, Mumbai–Goa, Lucknow–Mumbai, Nagpur–Mumbai, and Gorakhpur–Mumbai. A special train was operated on the Howrah–New Delhi route, departing on December 6 and returning on December 8. Another special train is set to operate on the Mumbai–Madgaon route on December 7. These measures were taken considering holiday and weekend rush.
To further increase the capacity of existing services, the Railway Department has added extra coaches. Additional AC coaches have been attached to the Bengaluru–Agartala Humsafar Express, Mangaluru–Thiruvananthapuram Express, and Bengaluru–Chennai Express. A total of 116 extra coaches have been added to 37 trains, increasing seat availability across 114 trips. Officials said that around 35,000 additional passengers are being transported daily. They also mentioned that fully air-conditioned special trains may be introduced on high-demand routes. The Railway Department emphasized that their goal is to ensure comfortable travel for every passenger affected by flight cancellations.
