Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar has clarified that no eligible voters will be removed from the West Bengal electoral rolls, emphasizing that the Election Commission's primary goal is to conduct free and peaceful elections in the state. Speaking at a press conference in Kolkata on Tuesday, the CEC asserted that every qualified citizen must have the opportunity to exercise their franchise.
"Our objective is simple: every eligible voter's name must be on the list, and no ineligible person should be included," the CEC stated. Responding to criticisms regarding the Special Summary Revision (SSR) process in Bengal, he noted that the procedure followed was identical to that implemented in 12 other states. He further informed that the updated electoral rolls published on February 28, along with supplementary lists, are being uploaded to the official website for transparency.
The CEC maintained a firm stance on law and order, stating that the number of election phases in Bengal would be determined based on the state administration's preparedness. He issued a stern warning against political violence and intimidation.
Any attempts by political leaders to threaten voters or election officials will not be tolerated. All government employees involved in the election process must work strictly according to EC directives; negligence will result in serious consequences.
Addressing political criticisms, he remarked, "The EC does not comment on statements made by political parties. We act solely in accordance with the Constitution. To ensure a transparent process, the CEC announced that 100% video recording would be conducted at all polling booths across the state. He also unveiled the Commission's slogan for the upcoming polls: "The election phase is a matter of pride for West Bengal."
