Meta Platforms has announced that it will begin tracking employee activity on company devices, including keystrokes and mouse movements, to train its artificial intelligence models. The new tool, called the Model Capability Initiative (MCI), will record how employees use internal apps and computers. Meta says the data will help build AI systems that better understand real world computer usage.
The company stated that the collected information will be used only for AI training and will include safeguards to protect sensitive content. However, some employees have expressed concern, describing the system as “dystopian” and linking it to expected job cuts. Reports also suggest growing anxiety within the company amid recent layoffs and a hiring slowdown.
Meta has already reduced its workforce and significantly cut job listings in recent months as it increases focus on artificial intelligence. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has pledged massive investments in AI, aiming to make it central to the company’s future. He has also said that AI will significantly change the way people work in the coming years.
