The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has summoned senior global representatives of Meta and Instagram following reports that advertisements linked to child sexual abuse material (CSAM) were allegedly displayed on Instagram. Acting on the directions of Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the ministry has sought a detailed explanation on how such advertisements were approved, the platform's existing safety mechanisms, and the corrective measures implemented to prevent similar incidents.
MeitY has also directed Meta to immediately remove any content or advertisements promoting illegal material. The company has been asked to fully cooperate with the government's inquiry and submit a comprehensive response. The incident has once again raised concerns over content moderation, online safety and the responsibility of social media platforms in preventing the spread of unlawful material.
