The Telangana state government has made a strong appeal to the Central Government for the immediate sanction of houses to address the long-standing housing crisis in rural areas. State Revenue, Housing, and Information Minister, Shri Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, met with Union Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, in Hyderabad on Saturday to discuss the issue and submitted a formal representation.
Minister Ponguleti highlighted that between 2014 and 2023, the previous administration completely neglected rural housing, failing to secure even a single house from the Center for ten years. He pointed out that while other states benefited from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) 1.0, Telangana did not participate, leaving a massive backlog of eligible families. He informed the Union Minister that since the Revanth Reddy-led government took charge two years ago, housing for the poor has become a top priority, with a goal to provide homes to all eligible citizens within the next three years. The Minister explained that although the Center recently approved PMAY-G 2.0, Telangana was at a disadvantage due to the lack of "Awas+ 2018" data. However, a recent comprehensive state survey and subsequent verification via the "Awas+ 2024" mobile app identified 11.57 lakh eligible rural households. Given that no houses were sanctioned for rural areas in the last 12 years, Minister Ponguleti urged the Center to sanction 3 lakh houses for this financial year and an additional 2 lakh houses for the following year. He emphasized that the state government has already sanctioned 4 lakh Indiramma houses this year and noted that central support would significantly accelerate the mission to fulfill the dream of the poor to own a home.
