

New Delhi: A high-level review meeting on Census–2027 was held today in New Delhi under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The meeting was chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and attended by Chief Secretaries of States and Union Territories, State Census Nodal Officers, senior MHA officials, and Directors of Census Operations. Registrar General & Census Commissioner of India Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan, Additional Registrars General Sunil Kumar and Sanjeev Kumar, Deputy Director General Biswajit Das, along with senior ORGI officials, were present. Officials described Census–2027 as a historic national exercise and outlined comprehensive preparations, including the use of digital tools and the introduction of self-enumeration.
Addressing the meeting, the Union Home Secretary highlighted India’s rich and long-standing census tradition and emphasized the crucial role of States and Union Territories in ensuring the successful conduct of Census–2027. He called for timely appointment and training of census personnel, re-publication of notifications, avoidance of any administrative or boundary changes till March 31, 2027, effective use of digital tools including self-enumeration, and implementation of strong communication strategies to build public awareness, trust, and participation. He also stressed the need for regular monitoring and review of census-related activities with the active involvement of Chief Secretaries.
