Pieter Elbers, the CEO of IndiGo Airlines, has resigned from his position. Following his resignation, Rahul Bhatia, who is currently the Managing Director of the airline, has taken temporary charge of the company’s operations. Reports say that Elbers stepped down due to personal reasons. The InterGlobe Aviation board has approved his resignation and also accepted his request to waive the notice period so that the resignation can take effect immediately. Elbers had taken over as IndiGo’s CEO in 2022. Until a new CEO is appointed, Rahul Bhatia will oversee the airline’s operations.
Last December, IndiGo faced major operational disruptions. Between December 3 and December 5, about 2,507 flights were cancelled and 1,852 flights were delayed. These disruptions affected nearly three lakh passengers across the country. The issue reportedly occurred because the airline was not fully prepared to implement new rules related to pilot duty schedules.
After the incident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reduced IndiGo’s winter flight schedule by 10 percent. In January this year, the regulator also imposed a fine of ₹22 crore on the airline and asked the company to provide a bank guarantee of ₹50 crore to ensure system improvements.
