The Bhogapuram Greenfield International Airport near Vizianagaram is ready for its trial run. A long-time dream of the people of North Andhra, the airport will witness its first commercial flight on January 4. An Air India flight arriving from Delhi is scheduled to land at 11 a.m. Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, MP Kalisetti Appala Naidu and other officials will be present during the trial. If the test run is successful, discussions will begin to start regular flight services by May this year.
Once operational, Bhogapuram Airport is expected to turn Visakhapatnam into a major economic hub in South India. With round-the-clock flight services, international connectivity and new job opportunities, the region is set for rapid growth. Named after freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju, the airport is nearing completion at a fast pace and is seen as a project that will reshape the future of North Andhra.
The airport is being developed by the GMR Group, with L&T handling the civil works and operations for the next 40 years. A long runway has been built to allow easy landing of large international aircraft, making the airport ready for global travel needs.
